What is Brewing at Bay Roasters? Find Out Here!
Super stoked to share the inside scoop on an awesome coffee company focused on sustainability. All from where they get their coffee, the details of their products packaging and- even the labels! Alright, let’s cut to the chase and learn more below from my personal interview with Bay Roasters!
When did Bay Roasters become established? Who owns the company? –– “Bay Roasters was co-founded in July 2019 by Lea Ceasrine and Alex Weis. Lea is an NPR producer and freelance investigative journalist who covers topics pertaining to health, wellness and the environment. Alex is a software engineer working in tech.”
What is your mission? –– “Our mission is to make coffee culture waste–free. We founded this company after realizing how much we were contributing to coffee waste (and how much money we spent on coffee) as a daily need. Coffee is sold in disposable cups that can’t be recycled due to their inside lining and coffee is often packaged in wasteful bags that aren’t recyclable. We source coffee from roasters who emphasize our mission: economic + environmental sustainability. Roasters who build close relationships with their farmers and pay them fair prices for their coffee. We package in 100% compostable packaging from the inside–out. Our bags, shipping couriers, labels, and shipping labels are all biodegradable!”
Tell everyone more about the labels on your packaging 🙂 : –– “Our logo was designed by an incredible Brooklyn-based illustrator, Margalit Cutler. Check out her work! Our labels are simple, intentionally. We use our logo on our coffee bags, and on the reverse side, feature a label with our roaster’s logo and a description of the specific roast –– what region it’s from and what its tasting notes are.”
How can anyone purchase your coffee?: –– “You can sign up for a subscription here! We offer free shipping.” https://bayroasters.co/subscribe
Where does your coffee get sourced from? –– “Many places around the world 🙂 . Our roasters have close relationships with coffee farmers in Colombia, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Kenya and more.”
Is your coffee considered fair trade? –– “The Fair Trade certification poses many difficulties for coffee farmers. It requires them to spend thousands of dollars to maintain a license that they often cannot afford. Many of our roasters do not find farmers that have this certification. But it actually doesn’t mean that their coffee isn’t ‘fair trade’ –– our roasters know their farmers, work with them closely, visit them and pay them fairly. We trust our roasters. For example, one of our roasters’ sources coffee from their family’s farm in Mexico.”
How long does it take to compost the packing of the coffee beans? –– “Our mailing couriers can decompose in 6 months! For more information on our packaging resources, check here.”
Is there a commitment to the subscription?: –– “Nope! You can order a single shipment for $20 or sign up for a weekly, biweekly, monthly or 3-month subscription for $20. No commitment necessary.”
Anything else you want the public to know? –– “We think that everyone should have access to premium, delicious coffee. We admire the roasters that we work with and want to make sustainability also accessible for everyone. We intend to use our platform wisely, as an educational tool, (and for us to learn, too!) We post information about how to compost, ways to go low-waste, and always share amazing coffee products that reduce waste such as reusable cups, straws, filters, equipment and lids.”
“We also routinely post blog posts here about visiting our roasters’ production facilities and other information. “
Huge shout out to Bay Roasters for their efforts in making the world a better place!
Peace and love,
Xoxo Jo
